Another article that I read was titled, “The Attachment of Greed to Self-Interest” by David P. Levine. Levine is a professor at the University of Denver. He argues, “Though prominent in shaping our thinking about self-interest, the part played by greed is as often denied as acknowledged. The denial of greed expresses the ambivalence it provokes, which stems form the danger it poses or seems to pose. This danger stems, in part, from the link between greed and destructiveness.” So I believe that Levine thinks that people know that greed exists however some deny and some acknowledge that it is there. Then he goes into saying that those who deny that greed exists are the ones who are going to be put into “danger”. He also says “Greed represents an aspect of the desire to live. … By its very nature it is endless and never assuaged; and being a form of the impulse to live, it ceases only with death.” So I believe that Levine thinks that for some people greed is a way of life, a desire in order to live their lives. Also, he says that greed is endless. I believe this to be totally true because once you start to become greedy; it’s hard to stop being greedy. I think it’s kind of like an addiction. You always want more and you are never really ever going to be satisfied. I wonder if this is why Jayne is always looking out for “better” jobs. I think Jayne has the mentality that he will never have enough and never be satisified.
