Blog 9
For the next episode of my choice I watched the 9th episode of Firefly, “Ariel”. When Simon describes his plan to make money to everyone, I found it funny that Jayne was actually going to go along with it, since Jayne can’t stand Simon. And when Simon and River and Jayne are in the x-ray room, Jayne actually seems like he’s worried about River. As the episode progressed, however, I was starting to think that Jayne had something up his sleeve. As it turns out, he did and was the one that called the feds on River and Simon. I feel that the “theme” for this episode is that karma is truly a bitch. Jayne thought that he would make more money by calling the feds than what Simon’s “job” would’ve paid him. But to his dismay, he too was taken by the feds with River and Simon and didn’t receive his money that he thought the feds were going to give him. Because Jayne was extremely greedy and looking out for himself, he ultimately could’ve gotten the whole crew killed. I don’t understand what makes a person feel the need to be that greedy when it comes to making money. What desires a person to put others under the bus in order to succeed? I understand that it’s a dog-eat-dog world, but I could never imagine putting another human being’s life in danger just to better mine a little bit. I think it’s ironic, at the end of the episode, how Mal puts Jayne’s life in danger just as Jayne did to River’s and Simon’s.
