I read another one of my articles titled “Greed feels good, so watch out” by Kerry Hannon. Hannon writes for USA Today. Hannon interviewed Jason Zweig, author of “Your Money and Your Brain: How the New Science of Neuroeconomics Can Help Make You Rich.” Zweig believes that there is a battle between your “brains” when it comes to making money. He says, “There is a battle between the ‘reflexive brain’ (emotional-driven biological circuits that make us crave rewards) and the ‘reflective brain’ (analytical circuits). Your brain becomes intensely aroused when you anticipate a financial gain: ‘Your brain treats potential investing (or gambling profits as a broad class of basic rewards, like food, drink, shelter, safety, sex’ or drugs.” So I think that Zweig believes that anticipating the financial gain is more “fun” than actually receiving the money. I think this ties really well with Jayne because he was obviously very excited to get his money from the Feds because it was a more amount of money than Simon’s job. I think Jayne got to wrapped up into the idea of making more money and that ultimately cost him getting arrested. So I think Zweig would say that Jayne’s “brains” were battling and ultimately his “reflexive brain” won. He was so emotionally driven to get the money from the Feds that, I don’t think, he realized what his consequences were going to be. I also don’t think he really realized what his actions were going to do to Simon and River either.

I don't understand why people are so greedy with money. I want to be an elementary gym teacher and people are always saying how i'm not going to make money but teaching sports to kids and getting the summer off makes up for the money.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like an interesting article. For Jayne, all i think he has is his reflexive brain. All his thinks about is his money. I think that he might have understood what his actions were doing to Simon and River but I think he just chose to block it out because he wanted his money. And I also put the name of that article and everything on my blog!
ReplyDeleteI think we've been able to experience something like this before in our daily lives, though on a less extreme level. Sometimes when we see something we really want or think is really exciting, and we get hyped up about how great it really is. Usually though, after a few hours have passed or when we see it in real life, the excitement for whatever product or activity we were so hyped about isn't as exciting as it was initially. At least I've felt that way about certain things before.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of you. If you want to be an elementary gym teacher, I personally think that's great! I, myself, love kids so if that's what you're passionate about go for it you know? And yes having the summer's off would be great. I also agree that Jayne has a reflexive brain. And Grace, I completely agree with you. There have been many times were there is something that I really want at the mall or something and I think that I "have to have it". Obviously it's not as extreme as wanting money and risking other people's lives like you said!
